The former director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in southeast Texas says she had a "change of heart" after watching an abortion last month — and she quit her job and joined a pro-life group in praying outside the facility.

Abby Johnson, 29, used to escort women from their cars to the clinic in the eight years she volunteered and worked for Planned Parenthood in Bryan, Texas. But she says she knew it was time to leave after she watched a fetus "crumple" as it was vacuumed out of a patient's uterus in September.

'When I was working at Planned Parenthood I was extremely pro-choice," Johnson told FoxNews.com. But after seeing the internal workings of the procedure for the first time on an ultrasound monitor, "I would say there was a definite conversion in my heart ... a spiritual conversion."

The myth that Scranton mayor Chris Doherty, who recently came out embracing abortion as he begins a gubernatorial bid in Pennsylvania owns The Guild store was put to rest yesterday. The Guild, which sells Catholic items including Bibles, pictures, and rosaries is owned by the Diocese of Scranton, according to Director of Communications William Genello.

I spoke with Mr. Genello by phone yesterday, and in our first conversation he said he had not heard of the controversy surrounding whether or not Doherty owned the store. He called me back later in the day to tell me he does not.

He also said when asked if the Diocese was going to have a comment on the "Catholic" Doherty coming out in support of abortion, that he didn't know.

Funny, because I also contacted Pennsylvanians for Human Life's Scranton chapter on their thoughts on the mayor and have heard nothing.

As a matter of fact, since the news was made public, there has been nothing but silence from the people that should be protesting most. Odd that in a city of Catholics that no one is making a stink about this. Is it because no one cares?

Does anyone know where Doherty goes to Mass? I'd like to know if his priest is planning on witholding the Eucharist.

What can I say? I'm an optimist.

Scumbag Of The Day

Well we haven't had one of these in a while.

But when a supposed catholic politician decides he wants to run for higher office and decides to come out embracing the murder of innocent children in the womb, that gets my Irish up.

And Chris Doherty, mayor of Scranton has done just that. He is my Scumbag of the Day.

Maybe the month.

And what gets me even more pissed at Doherty, is that I have heard his family runs The Guild. I have also heard that the Diocese runs the Guild, so until I have confirmation, I will reserve judgment on that business.

I pray some of the people praying outside Planned Parenthood later this month will picket outside his house. I pray the next Bishop of Scranton condemns him. I pray his priest denies him Holy Communion.

I pray for a lot of things.

But mostly that we would stop murdering our children.

God have mercy on us for our grave offenses.

And pray that Christopher Doherty becomes a man and that one day he defends children in the womb.

The bill approved on July 15 by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee sponsored by Senator Ted Kennedy is a matter of deep concern to us. According to National Right to Life Committee Legislative Director, Douglas Johnson, "The Kennedy bill [and the House Democratic leadership bill] would result in the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade." Further, Johnson stated, "These bills, which President Obama is pushing hard, would result in federally mandated coverage of abortion by nearly all health plans, federally mandated recruitment of abortionists by local health networks, and nullification of many state abortion laws. They would also result in federal funding of abortion on a massive scale.”

Church teaching is clear regarding the responsibility of a civil society to uphold the sanctity of human life. In its instruction of 1987, entitled Respect for Human Life (Donum Vitae), the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith noted:

“The inalienable rights of the person must be recognized and respected by civil society and the political authority. These human rights depend neither on single individuals nor on parents; nor do they represent a concession made by society and the state; they belong to human nature and are inherent in the person by virtue of the creative act from which the person took his origin. Among such fundamental rights one should mention in this regard every human being’s right to life and physical integrity from the moment of conception until death.”

“The moment a positive law deprives a category of human beings of the protection which civil legislation ought to accord them, the state is denying the equality of all before the law. When the state does not place its power at the service of the rights of each citizen, and in particular of the more vulnerable, the very foundations of a state based on law are undermined …”

In the coming days, you will have the opportunity to vote on the Kennedy bill in its final version. We urge you to oppose this bill and any legislation that permits the destruction of innocent human life. Senator, consider the words of your late father as he addressed the

Democratic party telling them “…to move away from a lock-step litmus test which advocates abortion on demand in an effort to reach a broader national consensus.”

As LifeNews.com has reported, the appropriations bill Congressional Democrats put forward to fund the federal government through the end of the year restores funding to the United Nations Population Fund.

The United Nations Fund both advocates for abortion and is heavily involved in China's population control program - forced abortions.

In a time when our economy is teetering, when we need to look to our people at home, Obama is sending 50 million dollars to kill more babies overseas.

Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, doesn't it?

There is a crazy, anonymous pro-death person that has been commenting here.

What I always see from these pro-death people is that they never recognize the life or the divine spark in the fetus. Doing so makes their position untenable, so what they do is go on and on about the "mother" and what's good for the "mother".

So I made the remark to stop worrying about the mother and worry about the baby for a change. Then the comments started to come in where this person was HOLLERING AT ME! You know, ALL CAPS.

It annoys me enough to have anoymous baby-killers commenting, but when they start hollering at me, that's enough.

Washington DC, Feb 4, 2009 / 07:05 am (CNA).- Some pro-life leaders warn that activism against the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is distracting attention from its “evil twin,” the Prevention First Act (PFA). The PFA provides more taxpayer funding for contraception and abortion and contains coercive elements which could deny federal funding to some pro-life hospitals.

Patrick Daub, writing in the American Life League’s Nov. 19 STOPP Report, said that the PFA would make Title X family planning a permanent program and fund it at $700 million or more. In 2008 it received only $300 million.

Title X is a major source of funding for Planned Parenthood. In 2008 the organization received about 25 percent of the total funding, $75 million. Under the new rules, it could receive $175 million.

At present, Title X is a temporary program which must be renewed every year.

PFA would mandate that health insurance programs that cover prescriptions must cover abortifacient contraceptives.

Obediance and Trust

As we approach the vote on FOCA and the March for Life, I wanted to take a moment for those of us in our Scranton Diocese to remember the good Bishop Martino has tried to do in response to the culture of death.

He has written and spoken about the need for Catholics to vote pro-life, he went so far as to show up unexpectedly at a parish forum during election time where the USCCB's "Faithful Citizenship" document was being touted as proof from the Catholic Church that it was ok to vote for Obama.

Our Shepherd has taken much heat, yes, but he also doled it out.

As he said last November at St. John's Church in Honesdale "There is one teacher in this diocese, and these points are not debateable..." And because of that, his staunch support of the unborn, regardless of what happens I will stand by his decisions in the diocese when it comes to Called to Holiness and Mission.

Many of you know I have been critical of the Bishop's efforts where Called to Holiness and Mission are concerned, believing that a return to tradition will fill our empty churches, but I also understand that all of these buildings standing by filled to 20% capacity is a strain on the resources of the diocese.

Hopefully, they can one day re-open, but for now, we all know in our hearts what must be done. It is a shame, yes, because we love these Church buildings where our grandparents were married, and where we were baptized, but love doesn't pay the bills.

We must be obediant and trust our shepherd, he is here to do what is best for us. He has tried to do his best for the unborn.

Obama’s Abortion Bombshell: Unrestricted Abortion Over Wishes of Individual States a Priority for Presidency

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Barack Obama, the presumptive pro-abortion nominee of the Democratic Party, has plans to reward the allies that helped him topple Hillary Clinton from her throne by making total unrestricted abortion in the United States his number one priority as president.

In light of Obama’s recently achieved status as the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Focus on the Family’s CitizenLink has decided to remind its supporters that almost one year has passed since Obama made his vows to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund that abortion would be the first priority of his administration.

“The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act,” Obama said in his July speech to abortion advocates worried about the increase of pro-life legislation at the state level.

The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) is legislation Obama has co-sponsored along with 18 other senators that would annihilate every single state law limiting or regulating abortion, including the federal ban on partial birth abortion.

The 2007 version of FOCA proposed: “It is the policy of the United States that every woman has the fundamental right to choose to bear a child, to terminate a pregnancy prior to fetal viability, or to terminate a pregnancy after fetal viability when necessary to protect the life or health of the woman.”

Obama made his remarks in a question-and-answer session after delivering a speech crystallizing for abortion advocates his deep-seated abortion philosophy and his belief that federal legislation will break pro-life resistance and end the national debate on abortion.

“I am absolutely convinced that culture wars are so nineties; their days are growing dark, it is time to turn the page,” Obama said in July. “We want a new day here in America. We’re tired about arguing about the same ole’ stuff. And I am convinced we can win that argument.”

Besides making abortion on demand a “fundamental right” throughout the United States, FOCA would effectively nullify informed consent laws, waiting periods, health safety regulations for abortion clinics, etc.

Furthermore, medical professionals and institutions that refused abortions also would lose legal protections. FOCA would expose individuals, organizations, and governments - including federal, state, and local government agencies - to costly civil actions for purported violations of the act.

“Thirty-five years after Roe, abortion supporters, like Senator Obama, are dismayed that abortion remains a divisive issue and that their radical agenda has not been submissively accepted by the American public,” states Denise M. Burke, vice president of Americans United for Life.

“Rather than confronting legitimate issues concerning the availability and safety of abortion, they choose to blatantly ignore the concerns and interests of everyday Americans, as well as the growing evidence that abortion hurts women.”

Hillary Clinton, once the longtime Democratic front-runner and anticipated abortion president, conceded defeat last Saturday to Obama, who captured the nomination from her after a long and bitter campaign.

Obama has won the crucial endorsement of abortion activist Frances Kissling, who broke from the ranks of other radical feminist leaders earlier this year to endorse Obama, saying Obama, not Clinton, would better use the bully pulpit of the presidency to accomplish their aims and end the culture wars over abortion.

Phoenix, Mar 26, 2008 / 09:11 pm (CNA).- The Arizona legislature on Tuesday passed two bills regulating abortion in the state and sent them to Gov. Janet Napolitano for her consideration.

One bill clarified the circumstances that override the need for a minor seeking an abortion to obtain parental consent, while the other bill established state penalties for partial-birth abortion.

House Bill 2769 builds on a federal law outlawing partial-birth abortions. It makes performing the procedure a Class 5 felony, which cannot be pleaded down to a misdemeanor.

Senator Linda Gray described in detail on the Senate floor how a partial-birth abortion is performed. “This is a horrible, horrible procedure,” she said.

Ron Johnson, Executive Director of the Arizona Catholic Conference, called the bill “important pro-life legislation.” He said a state ban was needed so that Arizona citizens did not have to rely upon the United States Justice Department to prosecute violators.

“Additionally,” Johnson said, “a state ban is helpful because federal prosecutors attempting to enforce the current partial birth abortion ban must first show that interstate commerce is somehow impacted.”

Senator Paula Aboud said the bill "claims to copy the federal law but it goes too far." She said it creates a situation where a doctor could be prosecuted under both state and federal law.

The other bill, House Bill 2263, outlined the critera a judge should consider when deciding if there is “clear and convincing” evidence that a minor has the maturity to undergo an abortion without parental consent. A judge can consider whether the minor has worked and lived outside the home, handled her personal finances, or made other significant decisions on her own.

Senator Aboud criticized the bill for burdening minors already in a difficult position. "For some, speaking to their parents is not an option," she said.

"It is not changing the law or adding any new burdens," said Cathi Herrod, president of the Center for Arizona Policy, a conservative think tank.

The Arizona House of Representatives also approved a bill that bars nurses from performing surgical abortions.

The bills now require the approval of Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. She has vetoed other abortion laws in the past, including one involving parental consent for minors.
