Blasphemy Against Our Lady!

University of Dallas President Frank Lazarus allowed an art display at the college depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary as a scantily clad stripper! The print has been stolen and it is believed the theft may have been perpetrated by outraged Catholic students. Read the following from the Dallas News, make prayers of reparation and write to the University President and the US Nuncio to express your outrage at this blasphemy against Our Lady at a "Catholic" University. Looking back, trouble seemed likely when an artwork depicting a stripper as the Virgin Mary went on display last month at the University of Dallas.

And trouble sure came, though the artist says she was making a point about perceptions and didn't intend anything sacrilegious.

The artwork – a print – prompted complaints from students at the Catholic college in Irving. Then, on Feb. 14, it was discovered missing from a school gallery.

It still hasn't been found, and the case is being investigated as a theft by campus police. Meanwhile, students, alumni and others have been weighing in, though some never got a chance to see the print and have had to rely on descriptions.

University president Frank Lazarus, in particular, has been criticized by alumni who feel he erred by not ordering the print removed after he got a look at it.

"It was imprudent of him to leave it up," said Tom Lagarde, a member of the Class of '97 and secretary of the school's national alumni board.

"Regardless of what the artist's message was ... the means she used were illicit, at least for Catholics."

To be precise, according to Dr. Lazarus, whilst considering the most prudent response to the print, he was informed that it was stolen. This is not the same as seeing it, nodding and walking away. I can't vouch for what he would have done had the print not been stolen, but I think the above at least should be noted correctly.

Also, the school had a Mass of Reparation, said by Father James Lehrberger, O. Cist., Father Robert Maguire, O. Cist., concelebrating, and with Dr. Lazarus reading the epistle. The texts were specifically chosen about the honor of Our Lady and about contrition for sin.

Absolutely. If that is the case. But we don't know that. What I have here is the report from the newspaper, not my own account of it.

He did allow the display. If he approved it without looking at it first, then he deserves all the heat he got.
