Sisters Teach Oprah!

One of the big stories of the past week is that the Dominican Sisters of Mary agreed to appear on the Oprah show. AS you can imagine, Oprah is not viewed in my home, so I have not seen the show. If you would like to view the episode, I have it below in four easy to watch segments. Enjoy.

Oh, come on. What's wrong with Oprah? I mean yeah she likes Obama but she's done other stuff in her life too, accomplished a lot, blah blah. And since I HAVE watched her show, she's really not a big jerk or anything from what I see. Even though she's uber rich and made it huge (from her own doing), she still kept a somewhat humble head on her shoulders and a lot of her shows were themed with trying to help/empower people and whatnot.

Anyway...I'll watch these when my internet isn't being all lame and cutting out every other minute.

Okay watched them. Kinda nifty. You know somewhere in the back of my head I thought I could probably be a nun. I see the appeal in it, and of course the main purpose being living for God and serving others. Without having to worry about all the other crap that comes with "life" and tie us down. Just that total devotion, you know? But....I dunno...maybe I can do good out 'in' the world too. Never felt a strong 'calling' to be a nun or anything, but I can see the magic in it.

If you find it appealing, you should look into it and at least try to find if you have a vocation. The vocation voice is often drowned out by the noise in our lives, and some quiet contemplation is usually called for.

I found it telling that the biggest obstacle O and her minion used was 'sex'. "No sex?" "You can't have sex?" "How do you feel about not having sex?" "Wow. No sex, huh?"

I'm gonna go back and count how many times they mention it.

You know I have thought of it slightly. Just because I always go back to...when I'm trying to figure out what to do with my life, it all comes down just to wanting to shed a light in the dark for others and all this. Right now I'm looking at pursuing psychology degree (secret goal is Ph.D. shh) but at the heart of it truth is just that I want to help people, specifically psychologically-suffering people because that's what strikes a chord with me and I find the most interesting. that's what matters. And in nunnery, I guess one of their main things IS service. We'll see...maybe I'll give the psych thing a whorl and if it doesn't fulfill I'll just get thee to a nunnery. A real nun thing, not the dang Shakespeare pun.

Yeah the sex thing...I noticed that too. Kind of put the nuns on an awkward spot. They were like "Well it's still there but...integrated...and...just part of...yeah..Jesus?" I mean that IS one of the sacrifices, that and romantic love. There's no way of really pussy-footing around it, so it was awkward to keep putting them on the spot about it. It just comes with deciding to be a nun (or a priest or monk...monks are celibate, right lol?)

And I thought the "Cell" comment of Oprah thinking it was a cell phone was stupid. And all the dwelling on iphones and crap...come on, don't insult their intelligence THAT much. I mean I don't even have a stupid iphone/ipod. Not everyone in my-age-generation is just some idiot who lives off of ipods.

Yeah, I got the vibe that the 'O' found them to be very quaint with all their reliance of God and stuff.

I haven't gone back to count the sex references yet, perhaps I will tomorrow as a form of penance!

hmm...I'm guessin' about eight times. I'll let you re-watch it all to count though...once was enough for me ;)

I didn't really know the thing about the habit being a wedding gown either, but I don't get why she was so agog at the fact that they don't have to be virgins. I didn't find that weird. A vow of chastity after being a nun, but not like "eeww damaged goods begone!" I guess I've seen priests ordained after they've been married (I think one's wife was dead etc.)...that seemed kind of odd to me a bit, but still, I guess it can be done. St. Francis was a partying player before becoming all holy too. So...ya know. Again, though, she was dwelling on the sex thing.
